An Iowa City man who had been arrested the night before for assaulting a University of Iowa police officer was taken into custody Saturday night after allegedly calling 911 three times to ask for a date.

21-year-old Andrew Derr of the Hawks Ridge Apartments made the calls just before 10:30pm. When dispatch answered, Derr reportedly asked the female dispatcher is she was single, and then to “hook up.”  The dispatcher disconnected the call.

Derr allegedly called right back, reportedly stating “You know who it is, take me out on a date.”

After dispatch disconnected the call, Derr called 911 a third time, this time reportedly making crude statements before disconnecting.

Officers went to Derr’s apartment, where he allegedly admitted to asking the dispatcher on a date.

He was charged with Obstruction of Emergency Communications, a simple misdemeanor.

Just before 1:45 Saturday morning, Derr had reportedly fallen down in front of the Airliner downtown, then ran down the middle of Clinton Street, stopped traffic, and laid on the hood of a car.  When he saw University of Iowa Police arriving, he allegedly lunged at an officer with both hands. He was taken to the ground, with the officer suffering injuries to a hand and a knee.

For that incident, Derr was charged with Assault on Persons in Certain Occupations causing Bodily Injury and Public Intoxication.
