Iowa’s majority-led Republican caucus outlined their priorities heading into the 2024 Legislative Session on Monday.
Speaker of the House Pat Grassley laid out four key priorities in a release from the party. They include improving education outcomes, maintaining a safe and secure Iowa, ensuring Iowa’s strong economy, and keeping government transparent and efficient.
The party takes a swipe at the higher education system, saying it has “clearly lost its focus on its true mission nationwide. They say they will work to get them focused on preparing students to fill the jobs most needed in the state.
Accusing neighboring states to the east and north of taking a soft-on-crime approach, the House says they will work to get repeat offenders off the streets and deter violent smash-and-grab mobs that have taken over cities in other states.
The party criticizes Bidenomics, saying that the president’s policies have hit Iowans’ pocketbooks hard. Because of a large budget surplus, Republicans plan to offer additional tax relief as well as cutting through the red tape that what they say holds Iowa entrepreneurs back.
Finally, the release says House Republicans want to modernize outdated IT systems in order for state government to make their tools easy to access and understand.
