A Coralville man was arrested after allegedly trying to register a 2021 Lexus under false pretenses.

29-year-old Sterling McNeil of 2nd Street went to the Johnson County Treasurer’s Office at around 2pm September 25th to register the vehicle. According to the arrest report, the DOT Bureau of Investigation and Identity Protection determined that NcNeil used a fraudulent California title and a fake bill of sale.  The title was determined to be fraudulent as it didn’t correspond with information on databases from the National Crime Information Center or the National Motor Vehicle Title Information System.  Investigators allege that the notary on the bill of sale doesn’t exist, and the seller signatures on file and the bill of sale did not appear to match.

An arrest warrant was issued October 19th; McNeil was taken into custody Sunday and charged with 3rd degree Fraudulent Practice, an aggravated misdemeanor punishable by a sentence of up to two years in jail.
