An Iowa City man faces a pair of felony car burglary charges.

30-year-old Michael Amling was booked into the Johnson County Jail just after 3:30 Wednesday afternoon. Iowa City Police say video footage shows Amling entering an unoccupied vehicle on the 4900 block of Sheffield Court just before 1:00 on the morning of Sunday, December 10th. A similar car burglary was reported at about the same time on the 700 block of Barrington Road.

Police located Amling near the intersection of South Gilbert Street and Maiden Lane later that day. He was reportedly wearing the same clothing as in the video from Sheffield Court. He initially denied committing the burglaries, but once he was shown a photo of him committing the act he allegedly said his life was over and that there was no point in telling the truth. Police say Amling then admitted to the Barrington Road burglary, and a search warrant executed at his Davenport Street residence turned up a pair of Beats by Dre headphones that had been stolen from the vehicle.

Amling has multiple previous convictions for car burglaries, with the latest being in 2016 in Scott County. He now faces two charges of 3rd Degree Burglary of a Motor Vehicle – 2nd or Subsequent Offense. If convicted on both charges, Amling faces a maximum of ten years in prison.
