Iowa City Police say they’ve arrested a man who allegedly stopped traffic at a busy downtown intersection, then assaulted a University of Iowa Police officer.

According to arrest records, security video shows 21-year-old Andrew Derr of the Hawks Ridge Apartments falling down in front of The Airliner just before 1:45 Saturday morning, then running down the middle of Clinton Street after he was helped up. At one point, Derr reportedly stopped traffic and laid on the hood of a car at the intersection of Clinton and Washington Streets.  He was again helped back up.

When Derr saw arriving UI Police, he allegedly lunged at the officer with both hands. The officer took Derr to the ground, suffering injuries to a hand and a knee in the process.

Derr was arrested and charged with Assault on Persons in Certain Occupations Causing Bodily Injury and Public Intoxication. If convicted on both charges, he faces a maximum of 25 months in jail.
