The suspect in a shooting at an Iowa City Casey’s has been given a deferred judgment.

21-year-old Makiya Hoffman of 5th Avenue SE in Cedar Rapids entered a guilty plea last month to a charge of Reckless Use of a Firearm Causing Property Damage. Earlier this week, Judge Chad Kepros gave her a deferred judgment with two years of probation and an $855 fine. Charges of Use of a Weapon in the Commission of a Crime and Intimidation with a Dangerous Weapon Causing Injury were dropped as part of the plea deal.

According to arrest records, just after 7:15pm on April 8th Hoffman pointed a gun at another person at the Scott Court Casey’s and fired a round at the person’s feet. The bullet missed, but it did shatter the window of the front door. Glass from the door caused one injury, and customers inside the store were forced to flee for cover.

If convicted on all charges, Hoffman would have faced a maximum of 14 years in prison.
