Officials with the Iowa City Municipal Airport are trying to help homeless residents displaced when their encampment caught fire on airport grounds earlier this fall.
Airport manager Michael Tharp told The Daily Iowan that while city officials were technically required to evict those affected from the airport property, they waited to do so until the Shelter House winter shelter had opened on Southgate Avenue to make sure those affected had somewhere else to stay. There were 13 known people living at the encampment at the time of the fire.
The cause of the October 4th blaze is still undetermined.
