New charges have been filed against a suspect accused of assaulting an Iowa City Police officer and fleeing a traffic stop earlier this fall.

21-year-old Jayirus Dunson of McKinney, Texas was booked into the Johnson County Jail just after 1:30 Thursday afternoon. Dunson was originally taken into custody just after midnight on October 1st during a traffic stop on the 400 block of East College Street. Iowa City Police say drugs were located inside a car in which Dunson was a passenger. He allegedly lied about his name, assaulted an officer and fled on foot. He was captured after a brief foot chase that saw one officer suffer scrapes on his legs and his arms. Dunson allegedly used the fake name again when he was booked into the Johnson County Jail.

Investigators later learned Dunson lied about his name because he had a warrant for his arrest out of Texas. He now faces charges of Assault on Persons in Certain Occupations, Interference With Official Acts Causing Bodily Injury, Tampering With Records and Providing False Identity Information. If convicted on all charges, he faces a maximum of over four years in jail.
