Iowa City Police say a convicted felon falsified ATF documents in order to illegally purchase a firearm.

65-year-old Brian McKillip of the Iowa River manufactured housing community on South Riverside Drive was booked into the Johnson County Jail just after 11:15 Thursday night. Police say McKillip tried to purchase a Ruger LCP .22 caliber handgun at Theisen’s in Coralville on the afternoon of November 13th. The incident was reportedly captured on security video. When McKillip was filling out the necessary forms from the ATF, he reportedly checked the box indicating he was not a convicted felon. Records show McKillip has a 1st Degree Burglary conviction from 1988 and a felony drug conviction from 1994. He allegedly claimed to not remember whether or not he had felony convictions on his record, but he did admit to handling the gun.

McKillip is charged with Providing False Information in Acquiring a Weapon and Dominion or Control of a Firearm as a Felon. If convicted on both charges, he faces a maximum of ten years in prison.
