Iowa City man accused of assaulting protestor while armed and intoxicated

Allegedly assaulting a protestor while armed and intoxicated has led to an Iowa City man’s arrest.

Iowa City Police say 34-year-old Dario Cardona of East Court Street confronted a group of protestors near the intersection of Burlington and Dubuque Streets at 4:30 Friday afternoon. A verbal altercation allegedly turned physical, with Cardona and a protestor reportedly getting into a shoving match before Cardona punched the other person in the face. Police say the other person punched Cardona back. The protester suffered a swollen and red eye. Cardona was reportedly carrying a firearm at the time of the altercation.

Arriving officers say they found Cardona carrying a Glock 43 in a holster on his right side. He also allegedly showed signs of intoxication and registered a breath alcohol level of .202%.

Cardona is charged with Assault Causing Bodily Injury, Possession of a Dangerous Weapon While Intoxicated and Person Ineligible to Carry a Dangerous Weapon. If convicted on all  charges, he faces a maximum of three years in jail.
