A 22-year-old man missing from a crash in Muscatine County has been found deceased.

KCRG TV reports the crash happened at around 9:15pm Monday near the intersection of Independence Avenue and 231st Street. Upon arrival, law enforcement found a GMC Sierra on its roof in a ditch, but the driver was nowhere to be found. A phone was found in the vehicle.

Canines and drones were deployed to search for the driver, but were unsuccessful. A missing person report was filed on Tuesday morning by the parents of 22-year-old Samuel Kessel of Letts. They reported seeing him about an hour before the crash.

The search continued Tuesday with assistance from a plane operated by the Iowa State Patrol. Volunteers eventually found Kessel’s body at about 5:10pm, about a half mile east of Independence Avenue in a deep wooded creek bed.

Officials haven’t given a cause of death but said temperatures dropped into the single digits overnight Monday.

The Muscatine County Sheriff’s office is continuing their investigation.
