A parent of a Grant Wood Elementary School student is accused of threatening staff at the school while armed with a gun.

According to a release from the District, Iowa City Police were called to the school just after 9 am and told there was an armed parent making threats to several members of the school’s staff.  The parent was reportedly wearing a handgun in a holster on his hip. The suspect allegedly handed the gun to another person, who took it out of the building.

The school was placed on  “HOLD’ mode during the incident, meaning all exterior doors were locked and students and staff were forced to shelter in place.

The suspect has been identified as 31-year-old Brandon Jones of Iowa City. He’s been arrested and faces charges of Carrying Weapons on School Grounds and two counts of First Degree Harassment. If convicted on all charges, Jones could be sentenced to up to 9 years in prison.

The Iowa City Community School District announced that they will have counselors at Grant Wood Elementary for staff members or students who wish to speak to someone about the incident.
