An Iowa City man was arrested Thursday morning after an argument with his long-time girlfriend turned physical.

Stephen Ferski of Olivia Court turned 44 that day, and police say at approximately 7am he and the woman began arguing in their bedroom.  The incident allegedly turned physical, with Ferski reportedly covering her mouth and applying pressure.

He then allegedly held the woman by wrapping his arms around her and holding her down on the bed while she tried to get away.  Ferski then reportedly wrapped a t-shirt around his girlfriend’s neck and applied pressure, threatening to kill her.

When officers arrived, Ferski admitted to covering the woman’s mouth and holding her down to attempt to control her, but claimed he was just wrestling with her and tried to calm her down.

The couple have lived together for most of their three-year relationship.

Ferski was arrested and charged with Domestic Abuse Assault causing injury and Domestic Abuse Assault impeding Airflow. If convicted on both counts, he could be sentenced to up to three years in jail.
