An eastern Iowa man has been arrested after a traffic stop led to a weapons violation.

21-year-old Garrett Westerdale of Brooklyn Iowa was stopped Sunday night just before 9:30 near the intersection of Dubuque Street and Iowa Avenue because he reportedly wasn’t wearing his seatbelt as required, and had an improperly-placed validation sticker.  A check of Westerdale’s driving record showed him to be on his last day of being barred as a Habitual Offender and that he was required to have an ignition interlock device. No such device was installed in Westerdale’s Chevrolet.

He allegedly told the officer that there was a weapon in the center console; a search reportedly turned up a loaded Glock 17 handgun with two spare magazines.  Because Driving While Barred is an indictable offense, Westerdale was ineligible to carry the weapon.

He was charged on both counts and could be sentenced to up to three years in jail if convicted.
