An Iowa City woman faces child endangerment and assault charges following a botched child exchange Tuesday afternoon.

Iowa City Police say 33-year-old Brittany Wood of Jema Court met the father of her seven-year-old child at Kwik Star on Keokuk Street for a child custody exchange. Police say the child got into the car, realized Wood was drunk, then left the vehicle and called his father to pick him up. Wood allegedly got mad and slapped the child in the face before taking the child back to his father’s residence on East College Street. Investigators say Wood was not driving the vehicle in which she and the child were riding.

One of the father’s neighbors reports seeing Wood push the child, so they tried to intervene while recording the incident. Wood reportedly responded by trying to take the phone and kicking the neighbor’s thigh while trying to hit them with her hands.

Arriving officers say they saw Wood trying to engage other individuals in a physical fight.

Wood was arrested and charged with Child Endangerment, Assault and Public Intoxication. If convicted on all charges, she faces a maximum of 26 months in jail.
