Iowa City Mayor Bruce Teague publicly came out in support for councilor Pauline Taylor over councilor Laura Bergus in today’s election.

Teague said that Bergus is the “anti-police” candidate, citing a 2021 opinion piece she wrote in the Cedar Rapids Gazette in which she said, “Even without knowing exactly what should replace policing as we know it, we must try something different.” She went on to say that the majority of crimes in Iowa City are victimless, and decried the option of lethal force to issue speeding tickets, investigate crimes, or break up a party of drunken revelers.

Bergus told Iowa News Now that she knew she and the mayor differed on police funding, but didn’t know that he was going to come out publicly against her the day before the election.

Polls are open from 7am until 8pm today.
