Kirkwood Community College has found a buyer for their shuttered Iowa City property.
The Gazette reports nearly a year after the college announced it was closing its 32-year-old southeast Iowa City campus, Oral-B Laboratories has agreed to buy the over 84,000-square-foot property for $6.4 million — pending 120 days of performing “due diligence” on the deal.
The sale price is less that Kirkwood’s $7 million asking price.
Kirkwood made the decision to close the Iowa City location on Lower Muscatine Road after studies concluded that it would be cost-prohibitive to maintain and update the facility for evolving course needs.
Oral-B has not indicated what they plan to do with the property, and did not respond to the Gazette’s questions about those plans.
The county will start collecting property tax on the facility if the sale goes through. Kirkwood paid no property taxes on the building due to its public nature.
