A Cedar Rapids woman was arrested after initially being stopped for speeding, then taking off at even higher speeds.
At around 12:30am Monday, a sheriff’s deputy was monitoring traffic on Highway 218 when a northbound vehicle was reportedly exceeding the speed limit excessively. Radar registered the speed at 104 miles per hour on the 2003 Mercedes, driven by 34-year-old Kenyon Thorp of B Avenue NE.
Upon contact, Thorp allegedly gave the deputy a false name and date of birth before he could positively identify her. When she was asked out of the vehicle to be arrested, Kenyon reportedly refused and took off. Speeds allegedly reached up to 130 miles an hour over the course of pursuit before Thorp stopped at a westbound off ramp.
A post-arrest search reportedly turned up marijuana and a pipe on her person. A check of her driving records showed that she lacked the required SR-22 filing.
Thorp was charged with Reckless Driving, Providing False ID information, Interference with Official Acts, Eluding, marijuana possession, possession of drug paraphernalia, and driving while suspended. If convicted on all counts, she could be sentenced to over six years in prison.
