State volleyball tournament means Coralville traffic delays this coming week

City of Coralville news release

Iowa Girls Volleyball State Tournament

Allow extra travel time, expect delays, and use recommended routes; Girls State Volleyball Tournament brings extra traffic to the area

Coralville welcomes the Girls State Volleyball Tournament on Monday, October 30, through Thursday, November 2, 2023. The additional guests in the community will bring an increase in area traffic. 1st Avenue just north of E. 9th Street is reduced to one lane in each direction due to Iowa DOT 1st Avenue/I-80 interchange reconstruction. Traffic delays are expected, so residents and visitors are encouraged to plan ahead, allow extra travel time, and use alternate routes when possible.

State Volleyball Tournament
Xtream Arena and GreenState Family Fieldhouse, located in Coralville’s Iowa River Landing, will host the Girls State Volleyball Tournament with four days of matches Monday, October 30, through Thursday, November 2, scheduled each day and into the evenings. To help with traffic flow, the volleyball matches for Monday through Wednesday will be staggered by 25 minutes, and the gates at the Iowa River Landing South Parking Lot will be open all four days.

Routes to Know

  • Drivers entering and exiting the Iowa River Landing are encouraged to use E. 7th Street, as an alternate to E. 9th Street, to access 1st Avenue. This helps traffic flow and reduces backups near the intersection of 1st Avenue and E. 9th Street.
  • Drivers arriving in or leaving Coralville via I-80 are encouraged to use Exit 240 (Coral Ridge Avenue) or Exit 244 (Dubuque Street) due to construction at Exit 242 (1st Avenue).
  • Drivers leaving the Iowa River Landing to get on I-80 should exit the Iowa River Landing at E. 7th Street, head south on 1st Avenue to Highway 6, and get on I-80 at Coral Ridge Avenue Exit 240, or via Rocky Shore Drive to N. Dubuque Street Exit 244. This avoids the I-80 interchange work zone at Exit 242.
  • Watch the digital message boards along I-80 for travel alerts. Traffic conditions will be actively monitored by the City of Coralville and the Iowa Department of Transportation.

Parking Tips

  • Park in designated public parking spaces only; view parking map. Vehicles illegally parked in private lots may be ticketed and towed.
  • Do not use the roundabout in front of Xtream Arena to drop off passengers; this backs up traffic.

Plan Extra Travel Time
Traffic control adjustments will be made in Coralville to reduce backups and traffic sign boards will be posted, but travel delays are anticipated. Plan extra time to get to your destination, and watch for pedestrians near the event and parking areas. The tournament is expected to bring visitors from all over Iowa to the volleyball matches as well as Coralville’s restaurants and businesses.
