The city of West Branch is considering merging its police force with the Cedar County Sheriff’s Office.

That’s according to the West Branch Times, which reports the West Branch city council will discuss the proposal at a special Monday night meeting. The proposal comes at the suggestion of City Administrator Adam Kofoed, who told the newspaper disbanding the police force entirely is not an option.

The West Branch Police force has recently seen dwindling numbers. One officer will be resigning as of November 5th, leaving the department with only two active officers.

One of those remaining officers is Cathy Steen, who also serves as School Resource Officer for West Branch Community Schools. School officials told the Times they hope any agreement between West Branch and the Cedar County Sheriff’s Office would allow Steen to continue serving in that capacity.

Monday night’s council meeting is set for 7 p.m. at the West Branch city offices on North Poplar Street.
