17-year-old Jack McCaffery has accepted the maximum punishment for his role in a fatal May collision.

The Press-Citizen reports the son of head Iowa basketball coach Fran McCaffery will waive his right to a sentencing hearing and accept a $1000 fine and a 180-day suspension of his driver’s license after being found guilty of failure to yield to a pedestrian by a judge last month.

He was to be sentenced November 21st.

McCaffery was still 16 on May 22nd when he told police he was heading to Coral Ridge Mall heading westbound on Melrose Avenue near Kennedy Parkway when he passed stopped vehicles in the right lane and struck 45-year-old Corey Hite, who was out for a run. The judge determined McCaffery wasn’t speeding, distracted by his cellphone, or impaired by any drugs or alcohol, but failed to yield to the pedestrian.
