Navigator CO2 Ventures has officially withdrawn its application to build a carbon capture pipeline through the state, citing regulatory hurdles in South Dakota and its ultimate destination in Illinois.

Last month, South Dakota’s Public Utilities Commission denied Navigator’s permit because the proposed pipeline route violated county ordinances.  Iowa’s permit was pending while the company was waiting for a decision from state regulators in Illinois. The company pulled its permit application in Illinois for the second time, leading to Monday’s request to withdraw its petition in Iowa.

The Des Moines Register reports Navigator proposed to build a 1,300-mile pipeline that would carry liquefied carbon dioxide emissions from ethanol and other industrial agriculture plants across Iowa, Nebraska, Minnesota and South Dakota to Illinois, where it would be sequestered underground.

Navigator asked its petition be withdrawn without prejudice, potentially leaving the door open for the company to reapply. Navigator said Tuesday they have no plans to revive the pipeline plan in Iowa.
