Fare Free Iowa City is in its third month, and the goal of increasing ridership is definitely working.
According to statistics from Iowa City Transit, ridership was up in September by 38 percent compared to September 2022. That’s after ridership increased 53 percent in August compared to the same month a year ago.
The Towncrest, South Iowa City and Oakcrest routes are showing the largest increases, while paratransit ridership is up 23 percent from September 2022.
Fare Free Iowa City is a pilot program that provides free bus rides to everyone on city buses. The program will be reviewed after the two-year commitment nears completion.
