A North Liberty woman was charged with her 2nd OWI after she was found with a damaged vehicle on an Iowa City street early Thursday.
A Johnson County Deputy was on patrol on Prairie Du Chien Road NE around 2:45 and observed 22-year-old Kaleigh Van Den Berg of Gooselake Circle standing in the middle of the road, with her Kia stopped at the intersection with 320th Street NE. She allegedly staggered to the squad car, and was told to return to her still-running car.
Van Den Berg reportedly couldn’t keep her balance walking back to her car, which had significant damage. The arrest report indicates that both tires on the passenger side were off their rims, and Van Den Berg did not know what she struck.
She allegedly had a strong odor of ingested alcohol, bloodshot watery eyes, and slurred speech. After showing significant impairment on field testing, she consented to a Datamaster test, which reportedly showed her BAC at .264 percent, over three times the legal limit to drive.
Van Den Berg had a previous OWI conviction out of Washington County in April 2022; she was charged with second offense, an aggravated misdemeanor punishable by a jail term of up to two years if convicted.
