An Iowa City man was arrested early Wednesday after allegedly attempting to break into his ex-girlfriend’s residence after she wouldn’t answer the door for him.

At approximately 2am, 30-year-old Brian Almendarez of Prairie Du Chien Road was called in by the woman because she was woken up by him reportedly banging on the back side of the house. He then allegedly moved to the side door and began kicking it until it opened, leaving the door mostly off the frame.

Officers arrived as Almendarez was attempting to enter the woman’s residence, where she and her three children had been sleeping.

Upon contact, Almendarez had bloodshot watery eyes, slurred speech and unsteady balance. He had the odor of ingested alcohol.

Damage caused by Almendarez included the door, door frame, surrounding drywall, and the screen door. He also allegedly smashed multiple pumpkins on the property.

Almendarez was arrested and charged with 2nd degree Attempted Burglary, Public Intoxication, and 5th degree Criminal Mischief.  If convicted on all counts, he could be sentenced to over five years in prison.

A No-Contact order was requested by the victim.
