A Cedar Rapids man was arrested in downtown Iowa City early Sunday morning after allegedly being found with a firearm and marijuana.

Officers were called to the 400 block of South Linn Street just before 4am on a criminal mischief report. Upon arrival, they reportedly observed 20-year-old Derrius Bibbs of Cavalier Street Northeast leaving the scene. He was allegedly grabbing his waistband and walking with his legs spread wide as if he was trying to keep something from falling out of his waistband.

Bibbs was ordered to stop, but reportedly ran, was caught, and handcuffed.  A search incident to arrest allegedly found marijuana in a pocket and a firearm in his waistband.

His criminal history showed a felony conviction, which led to Bibbs facing more serious charges. They include 1st offense Marijuana possession, Person ineligible to carry Weapons, Interference with Official Acts while possessing a firearm, and Dominion or Control of a Firearm as a Felon. If convicted on all charges, Bibbs could be sentenced to up to twelve years in prison.
