Iowa City to start charging for Electric Vehicle charging

Iowa City will start charging for the use of City-owned EV charging stations at the rate of $0.16 per kWh starting Monday.

According to a release from the city, the change comes after the State of Iowa passed the Electric Fuel Excise Tax earlier this year, which taxes electricity used to charge EVs.

Payment should be made through the ChargePoint app residents already use to charge their vehicles at a City EV charger.

The city has 12 EV chargers, located in each of the City’s parking ramps.  Additional EV chargers will be added later this year at the Dubuque Street and Chauncey Swan ramps, increasing that total to 16.

Those with questions can call the city’s Parking and Transportation Office at 319-356-5151.
