Highland hires Hawkeye alum as new baseball coach

A former University of Iowa baseball player is now the head baseball coach at Highland High School.

The News in Kalona reports former Hawkeye pitcher Allen Rath has been hired to lead the Husky program. Rath pitched for Iowa from 1987 to 1990, and still holds the school records for wins with 25 and strikeouts with 246. He was drafted by the Cincinnati Reds in 1986, but chose to attend the UI instead. He was drafted again by the California Angels in 1989.

The Highland graduate has been an assiatnt coach with Cedar Rapids Washignton for the last two seasons.
Rath isn’t the only Hawkeye in his family, as his wife and daughter each played for the UI softball program.
