The update process has begun for the Johnson County 2018 Comprehensive Plan: Sustaining Success Through 2028This process includes opportunities for the public to share their ideas and thoughts on priorities and key issues. The plan was adopted in 2018 with the intention that there would be a review after five years.

The public is invited to attend any of these drop-in input sessions:

  • 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 19, 2023, at the Sharon Center United Methodist Church, 2804 520th Street SW, Kalona (in rural Johnson County);
  • 3 to 4:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 23, 2023, at the Johnson County ISU Extension and Outreach Building, 3109 Old Highway 218 South (Riverside Drive) in Iowa City; or
  • 5:30 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 24, 2023, at The Midnight Gem, 2613 Ders Drive NW, Swisher.

The current plan, as amended through May 5, 2022, can be accessed online in English at www.johnsoncountyiowa.gov/compplan. A printed copy of the plan is also available at the Planning, Development and Sustainability Department at 913 S. Dubuque St. in Iowa City.

The Comprehensive Plan identifies where and how land use changes might occur in the unincorporated area of Johnson County. The unincorporated area includes rural areas and villages but does not include the cities. The plan addresses important topics such as land use, housing, economic development, transportation, natural resources, sustainability, and quality of life. The plan also guides collaborations with cities and other partners and helps create policy so that change happens in a way that best considers the needs of the county, its residents and the environment.

There will also be opportunities for public input at meetings of the Planning and Zoning Commission and the Johnson County Board of Supervisors. Those meeting times, dates and locations will be posted at www.johnsoncountyiowa.gov/comp-plan-update-2023. Links to surveys (in the following languages: English, Spanish, French, and Arabic) will also be posted at that website.
