A transient with a dangerously high breath alcohol level has been arrested for drunk driving.
Iowa City Police were called to a report of an intoxicated driver in the parking lot of the 501 Apartments on Southgate Avenue at 10:15 Wednesday morning. 55-year-old Charles McDile, who lives at the facility, was reportedly found in the driver’s seat of a 2006 Pontiac Grand Prix. The vehicle was parked over a curb with the keys in the ignition.
McDile reportedly claimed he was trying to back up in order to exit the parking lot. Police say he showed signs of intoxication, had an open container of alcohol tucked into his pants, and was unable to complete field sobriety testing. A Datamaster test showed his breath alcohol level as .333%. A recent study from Notre Dame University shows a BAC of .35…just .017% higher than McDile’s…is equivalent to being administered surgical anesthesia, and could lead to death.
McDile is charged with Operating While Intoxicated. He has a lengthy criminal history.
