An area transient was taken into custody Saturday afternoon on a theft warrant.

According to the police report, 30-year-old Gregory Echols was walking by the victim’s Iowa Avenue residence the evening of September 18th when he saw two packages from Amazon on the front step.  Doorbell camera footage allegedly shows Echols grabbing the packages and walking off with them.

The theft was discovered almost 24 hours later when the victim reviewed the footage.  Echols was positively identified by two officers due to past interactions with him.

The value of the packages was less than $300.

Due to two prior theft convictions earlier this year,  Echols was charged with 3rd degree Theft, an aggravated misdemeanor. He could be sentenced to up to two years in jail if convicted.
