The mother of a former University of Iowa student facing trial for Attempted Murder and robbery charges was sentenced to five years in prison for helping him flee the country.

45-year-old Lima Younes and her husband Alfred helped their son Ali cut off his ankle monitor at their home in Sutherland. They sold their vehicle and couldn’t be tracked as her phone was left at home while her husband and Ali had turned their phones off.

Ms Younes reportedly misled investigators, saying their son was at home and they were returning from Davenport, when in fact Ali had boarded a flight to Jordan with his grandmother.

Alfred Younes was also convicted and faces the same five year prison term when he is sentenced on October 26th.  The Gazette reports he plans to ask for a deferred judgement with probation.
