The dozens of dogs rescued from a Riverside farm have now all been groomed, nursed back to health, and ready for adoption.
The Press-Citizen reports that the dogs were taken from the Sunset Valley Farm in Riverside on Aug. 24 after an investigation by the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship uncovered substandard living conditions.
Two of those dogs also contracted canine parvovirus, a potentially deadly disease that forced the Iowa City Animal Care Facility to close its doors briefly and quarantine the ill dogs.
60 of the dogs were taken to an adoption agency in Michigan by a nonprofit organization, and another 30 went to other adoption agencies. That still left over three dozen for the facility to nurse back to health.
A call for donations resulted in an overwhelming response almost immediately. The Animal Care facility had to rent a storage pod for all the dog food and other needed items.
In a Facebook post, Animal Care & Adoption Center said they received several applications for the dogs already and are in the process of approving the ones they have, but are still accepting others. They also have other dogs that are in need of adoption.
State Representative Dave Jacoby of Coralville has written to Governor Kim Reynolds asking for her cooperation in holding unscrupulous breeders more accountable.
