An Iowa City man faces multiple charges after a traffic stop found him allegedly intoxicated while behind the wheel.

Police stopped 37-year-old Marvis Jackson of Burns Avenue just before 1am Wednesday on the 1200 block of Highland Avenue after he reportedly failed to activate his headlights and had no license plates on his vehicle. Jackson allegedly tried to flee before being stopped and apprehended. He also refused to place his hands behind his back and had to be forced into handcuffs.

Upon contact, he reportedly had bloodshot watery eyes, impaired speech, unsteady balance, and the odor of ingested alcohol.  Jackson refused chemical testing after submitting to preliminary field tests.  A search warrant was obtained, and he agreed to a Datamaster test, showing his BAC at .147 percent.

Jackson was searched, and a firearm was reportedly found in his pants pocket.  A subsequent probable cause search of the vehicle allegedly turned up alcohol and a marijuana cigarette.

A check of Jackson’s driving records showed a total of five convictions for OWI between 2012 and 2022. His driving status was allegedly found to be barred as an habitual offender, and his license revoked for the previous OWI charges.

Jackson has been charged with OWI third or subsequent offense; Dominion or Control of a Firearm by a Felon, Interference with Official Acts while possessing a Dangerous Weapon, 3rd offense Marijuana possession, Driving while Barred as a Habitual Offender, Driving while Revoked, and Possession of Weapons while Intoxicated.  If convicted on all counts, Jackson could be sentenced to up to 21 years in prison.
