Iowa not likely to require preregistration for 2024 Caucus

Despite a recently passed state law, it’s unlikely that either political party will require preregistration to attend the 2024 Iowa caucuses.

The Gazette reports the law, introduced by state legislator Bobby Kaufmann, gives both Republicans and Democrats the option of requiring preregistration. The intent was to prevent Democrats from flooding the Republican caucus and not showing a true indication of who Iowa Republicans want as their next presidential candidate.

The downside of that requirement would be voters couldn’t register the day of the caucus.

State Republican Party chairman Jeff Kaufmann appeared on last week’s episode of Iowa Press and said it appears unlikely that preregistration would be required, saying it would upset candidates campaigning in the state, and possibly threaten Iowa’s status as first-in-the-nation.

Kaufmann’s remarks can be seen online at iowapbs.org.
