A drunk driving suspect is accused of calling 9-1-1 while in custody at Iowa City Police Department headquarters.
According to arrest records, officers responded to a vehicle in a ditch on Highway 6 near Broadway Street just before 3:45 Sunday morning. The driver, 32-year-old Jeanette Harrell of Williamsburg, reportedly showed signs of intoxication, admitted to drinking, and was wearing a bar wristband. Police say three empty beer cans were found inside the vehicle.
Harrell was taken to ICPD headquarters on East Washington Street for processing. Once there, she allegedly refused to remain seated and had to be secured to a bench. Police also allege that when Harrell was allowed to use the restroom, she called 9-1-1 to request a new officer respond to the scene.
Harrell is charged with Operating While Intoxicated, Driving While Denied or Revoked, Interference With Official Acts, and Making a False Report to 9-1-1. If convicted on all charges, she faces a maximum of over two years in jail.
