Iowa City Animal Services is thanking the public for making an overwhelming number of donations after dozens of dogs were rescued from an alleged puppy mill near Riverside.
The shelter had been seeking donations of various items, but officials said early Saturday morning that the response was so overwhelming no more items are needed at this time.
According to a City of Iowa City news release, on Thursday the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office, Johnson County Emergency Management, the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship, and Last Home Animal Rescue conducted an investigation at a kennel at 3027 500th St. SW between Hills and Frytown.
As a result of the investigation, 131 dogs were surrendered to Iowa City Animal Services and are currently being treated at the Iowa City Animal Care and Adoption Center on Napoleon Lane, as well as other locations.
Due to the increase in animals at the adoption center, Animal Services asked for donations of various items on Friday. The response was so large, the agency said on its Facebook page Saturday that donations of those items are no longer needed. Monetary donations are still being accepted.
At this time, the animals seized are being evaluated and are expected to be ready for adoption at a later date. Due to the ongoing incident, the adoption center will be closed to walk-in traffic until Monday. Previously made appointments will be honored.
