Edited release

The Iowa City Police Department is warning the public about recent instances of counterfeit currency being passed.

In each instance, a fake $100 bill was used at an area business. Retailers are asked to test any large denominations they find suspicious. Counterfeit detector pens can be used, as well as UV counterfeit detector machines.

If a community member or retailer believes they have received a counterfeit bill, they should contact the police as soon as possible, note the time of the transaction, and get a good description/security video of the suspect.

This incident is being actively investigated by the Iowa City Police Department and we are asking the public for assistance. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Iowa City Police Department at 319-356-5275, or Iowa City Area Crimestoppers using the P3 Tips app, going online to iccrimestoppers.org, or calling 319-358-TIPS. All tips are held in strict confidence and anonymity is guaranteed.
