Iowa City Police officers were busy as usual in the downtown area over the weekend, and two separate incidents early Sunday resulted in the arrests of two individuals who allegedly assaulted them.

The first involved 22-year-old Krothopis Thompson of Burlington.  Officers were processing an arrest on a person who was resisting near the intersection of Washington and Dubuque Streets just before 1:30am Sunday when Thompson allegedly grabbed an officer’s arm and attempted to push him off the person being arrested.  After reportedly ignoring lawful orders to back up and stop interfering with the officers’ duties, he finally stopped his involvement when threatened with a taser.

Thompson was charged with Assault on Persons in Certain Occupations and Interference with Official Acts. He could be sentenced to up to 13 months in jail if convicted on both counts.

Less than a half-hour later, 21-year-old Jessica Watson of Arbor Drive was being arrested for allegedly fighting with another female. While lying on the ground in custody, Watson reportedly kicked one of the officers in the leg.

Watson, too, was charged with Assault on Persons in Certain Occupations, as well as Disorderly Conduct. She could get up to 13 months in jail if convicted on both charges.
