Iowa City’s Northside Neighborhood Association is proposing an amendment to city code that would reduce the maximum height of new residential buildings.

The Daily Iowan reports the group wants the maximum height dropped from 35 feet to 27 feet. They claim the current rules negatively affect affordable housing because it gives developers incentive to demolish existing single-family structures and replace them with larger structures with more occupants.

The Association says the lower heights would also preserve neighborhood character.

The Iowa City Planning and Zoning Commission voted 6-1 Wednesday to defer any action on the proposal; they will have another meeting to discuss the issue in October.
