The Iowa City Community School District has reached a new agreement with the district’s bus drivers, avoiding a potential strike to begin the upcoming school year.

The new three-year contract with Iowa Central School Bus reached on Monday includes an 8.5% raise for drivers the first year, followed by raises totaling $1 an hour for the next two.

Representatives for the drivers’ union, Teamsters Local 238, say the vote to approve the new contract was “overwhelming”.

Classes at Iowa City schools get underway on August 23rd.
