A transient is accused of damaging an Iowa City bus shelter and using various slurs toward police.

Police were called to an Iowa City Transit shelter on Boyrum Street just before 8:45 Friday morning for two subjects shadow boxing in the street. One of the subjects, 54-year-old Charles McDile, reportedly showed signs of intoxication. Officers confiscated and discarded an open beverage in McDile’s possession, warning him about public intoxication and how they were increasing patrol on the bus shelter, which has been the site of numerous recent calls for service.

Iowa City Police were called back to the Boyrum Street location just over a half-hour later after a report that a man named “Chuck” had broken out a bus shelter window. “Chuck” is one of McDile’s nicknames. Arriving officers say they found him at the scene, again next to an open container of alcohol. He allegedly showed what police called “poor emotional control”, and he’s accused of using both racial and homophobic slurs toward the officers.

McDile was arrested and charged with Public Intoxication. Jail records show he also faces a no-contact order violation.
