A Nichols man was arrested Tuesday night after allegedly breaking into the laundry room of a Hills building and stealing quarters from a dryer.

Deputies were called to the Main Street building at approximately 10:30pm on reports of a suspicious person in the laundry room.  The reporting party told dispatch that 23-year-old Kevin Ramirez frequents the address and allegedly sometimes steals things.

Upon arrival, video evidence was obtained showing Ramirez entering the laundry room with a black drawstring bag. A dryer’s payment mechanism had been broken off, with a few quarters left in the collection box. A brown paper bag containing $13 in quarters was found next to the mechanism, which Ramirez allegedly claimed was his.

A search of the drawstring bag reportedly turned up a pry bar and a screw driver. When asked about the incident, Ramirez reportedly said he took the mechanism off the dryer because there is a switch inside that can be flipped to get a free dryer cycle.

Ramirez was taken into custody; he faces charges of Possession of Burglar’s Tools, 5th degree Criminal Mischief and 5th degree Theft.  If convicted, he faces a total of 26 months in jail.
