Recently received federal grant money will help construct new headquarters for Iowa City Transit.

The Press-Citizen reports part of the $23.3 million will be used to purchase four new electric buses to add to the four they currently have.

The new building will replace Iowa City Transit’s outdated facility on South Riverside Drive. Darian Nagle-Gamm, the city’s transportation director, says the new building will be built for electric or other low-emission technology and be powered by clean renewable energy.

The current building is less than 40 years old, but has several issues. They include limited bus storage, uneven exterior concrete, outdated restroom facilities, and a lack of storage. The city estimates that repairs would likely cost about $2 million.

The new facility will cost roughly $20 million.
