The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics continues to be ranked in the top 50 among US hospitals in the same two disciplines as last year, and showed improvement in both.
The Gazette reports the latest US News and World Report rankings of best hospitals was released today and shows the UI’s opthalmology department’s ranking moved up from 7th to 6th, and its ear, nose and throat ranking moved from 31st last year to 28th.
The university hospital ranks considerably lower overall than it did back in 2012 and 2014, when they were ranked in the Top 50 in nine specialties. The UIHC received “high performing” recognition this year in five specialties, slightly down from the six recognized last year. They were Cancer, Gastroenterology and GI surgery, Orthopedics, Pulmonology and lung surgery, and Urology.
The UIHC is still ranked the top hospital in Iowa, followed by MercyOne Des Moines Medical Center, Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines, and Unity Point-St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids.
Denise Jamieson begins her tenure as UIHC Vice President for Medical Affairs effective August 1st. A nationwide search for a new CEO is also slated to launch today. The successful candidate will replace Suresh Gunasekaran, who left the hospital in early 2022.
