Another major construction project at the University of Iowa will be on the agenda tomorrow when the Board of Regents meets in Urbandale.

The Des Moines Register reports the school is requesting approval for a $19.75 million Biomedical research support facility expansion at its research park in Coralville. The project would add 17,200 square feet to the northwest portion of the current building. It would be funded by a National Institutes of Health Grant and the UI Carver College of Medicine indirect cost recovery funds.

In an information packet sent to the Regents ahead of tomorrow’s meeting, the UI says that adequate biomedical lab space is needed so they can recruit and retain top-notch researchers and their programs from a range of disciplines, and calls the proposed expansion essential to address the current and future needs of research performed at the University.

If the Board approves the project, construction would start this fall and be completed sometime In the spring of 2025.
