Construction has begun on a new medical clinic in North Liberty.

The Cedar Rapids Gazette reports groundbreaking ceremonies were held earlier this week for the new Steindler Orthopedic Clinic Ambulatory Surgery Center near Forevergreen Road, just off Interstate 380.

The project site is about a mile-and-a-half east of the area where University of Iowa Health Care is building its new hospital with an estimated price tag of $395 million.

Steindler’s project is less ambitious, coming in at $29.3 million. The 35,880-square-foot clinic is expected to be completed in early 2025. Steindler officials have said they expect the clinic to be the anchor for a full campus which will eventually include an orthopedic clinic, a hospital and even a hotel.

The ambulatory surgery center had been opposed by the UI as well as the Iowa City Ambulatory Surgical Center and the Johnson County Surgical Investors groups. Nobody from the university showed up at a public hearing to oppose the project, and the other two groups withdrew their opposition about an hour before that hearing.
