An Iowa City armed robbery suspect has been given a deferred judgement in a plea deal with prosecutors.

Calvin Beemer was originally charged with 1st Degree Robbery and Interference with Official Acts. Iowa City Police say the 22-year-old confronted and assaulted the victim at their residence in the Cole’s manufactured housing community on South Riverside Drive on February 19th. Beemer was reportedly armed with a replica gun at the time. He then allegedly pointed it in the victim’s direction and threatened to kill them.

Police say Beemer then tried to force the victim into his Chevy Silverado before punching them in the nose, causing bleeding.  At one point, Beemer took the victim’s cellphone.
Beemer reportedly ignored police who told him to get out of his vehicle, then drove away and later fled on foot.

If convicted on both counts against him, Beemer could have been sentenced to over 25 years in prison. On Friday, Judge David Cox dismissed the robbery charge and Beemer pleaded guilty to a 1st Degree Theft charge. He was given a deferred judgement and put on two years’ probation.
