Dog dies in Iowa City house fire

A dog has died in an Iowa City house fire.

According to a news release from the Iowa City Fire Department, crews responded to a blaze at 987 Walker Circle just before 5:30 Friday night after the resident of the adjacent unit called 9-1-1. Firefighters arrived on the scene at 5:35 p.m., where they encountered heavy smoke. The unit was determined to be unoccupied.

The fire was contained to the original unit and extinguished by 5:49 p.m. The subsequent investigation determined a dog inside the residence was killed.

There were no civilian or firefighter injuries reported. The home sustained an estimated $100,000 in damages. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
