Iowa City Police say a man tried to report a stolen car to them while armed and intoxicated…and he allegedly threatened a man he considered a suspect.
According to arrest records, 50-year-old Casey Gustafson of Briar Drive knocked on the window of an ICPD squad car parked on the 200 block of South Dubuque Street just before 9:45 Friday night. Gustafson wanted to report his car was stolen. As Gustafson was speaking to the officer, another man reportedly approached and claimed Gustafson had threatened him, claiming the man had stolen his car, and that he was coming for him.
Police say Gustafson showed signs of intoxication. A handgun could be seen in his front pocket. Gustafson allegedly refused commands to put his hands up, and he was taken into custody by force.
The handgun was a Ruger 9mm with 14 rounds in the magazine.
Gustafson is charged with Person Ineligible to Carry Weapons, Carrying Weapons While Intoxicated, Interference With Official Acts Involving a Weapon, and Public Intoxication. If convicted on all charges, he faces a maximum of over seven years in prison.
